Shamrock Bank, which was founded by Tom Monaghan, has agreed to merge with First National Bank of the Gulf Coast, the companies said in a statement Tuesday evening. The merger is subject to regulatory and shareholder approval and if it goes through, the Shamrock branch in Ave Maria will become a branch of First National. [Updated Wednesday morning]

Ave Maria Development has announced that strong sales by all four homebuilders pushed the total number of new home contracts in Ave Maria to 133 through the end of the third quarter. CC Devco, Del Webb, Lennar and Pulte sell homes in four neighborhoods -- Maple Ridge, Del Webb, Emerson Park and Hampton Village.

 The Donahue Academy junior varsity football team had a different look on the field Saturday -- 11 players instead of the usual seven. The school's first 11-man squad beat Marco Island 13-6, and will play one more contest although there are no plans to play a full 11-man schedule.

 A fire in a common room at the Mother Teresa residence hall on the Ave Maria University campus forced evacuation of hundreds of women residents Monday. No one was injured and a spokesperson for the university said that damage was limited to the common room where an overheated laptop ignited a couch, causing the fire.
