AMU Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Ave Maria University is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week with a number of events that show how far the school has come since its beginnings in temporary facilities in Naples.

AMU is inviting residents and donors to share in the activities, which culminate Saturday with the announcement of the Mother Teresa Project, the first football game played in new facilities on the school campus – and a birthday BBQ cookout in the afternoon.

srdorothy-25010th anniversary festivities begin Thursday night, with a fall sports pep rally and student bonfire at 9 p.m.

Sister Dorothy, the fifth woman to join Mother Teresa's Sisters of Charity, will speak Friday at 4 p.m. in the lecture hall of the AMU academic building. She is the second most senior surviving sister of the original twelve chosen by Mother Teresa. There will be a chance to meet her Sunday morning in the AMU Visitor's Center after the 9 a.m. Mass in the oratory. Pictured right, Sr. Dorothy in a 2010.

Friday evening, President Jim Towey will be host for a cocktail reception in the ballroom of the AMU student union.

The next morning, at 10 a.m. in front of the Oratory, Mr. Towey will dedicate the Mother Teresa project, a new endeavor at AMU that seeks to further Mother Teresa's mission with academic study and service. Mr. Towey worked closely with Mother Teresa as her legal representative for many years.

The game will be the first regular-season contest played on campus, at a new facility opposite the Golisano Field House. Left, the new field (photo by Jeremiah Rappley)

The field sports a new electronic scoreboard, enclosed press box and seating for 300 fans. "It's absolutely exciting," said AMU Athletics Director Shawn Summe. "I think we'll have better student support and the community will rally round."

All events are open to the public. The president's cocktail reception has a cash bar, and the BBQ for non-students and AMU staff costs $7 for adults and $4 for children.
