The new Tom Monaghan Catholic Leaders Scholarship Fund is approaching $1.5 million in donations in its first year, Ave Maria University President Jim Towey announced at a fundraising dinner attended by more than 400 people Wednesday night. Above, Mr. Monaghan and Mr. Towey at the dinner.

Voters Approve Tax Increase for Immokalee Fire District Print E-mail

The Immokalee Fire Control District -- which includes the town of Ave Maria -- won approval by voters Tuesday for a mill rate increase that will partially restore funding to the district, which has had to cut budgets and lay off employees because of lower revenues due to declining property values. The mill rate increase will add $75 in property taxes per $100,000 of assessed value. Two other Collier County fire districts had similar requests rejected at the polls.

Steak Cook-Off Surpasses Goal of 1,000 Steaks Print E-mail

The 2nd Sunshine State Steak Cook-Off in Ave Maria was twice as large this year, selling more than 1,100 steaks to residents and visitors who packed the Ave Maria town center Saturday. A team of Barron Collier employees won the first-place trophy for the best steak in Florida at the event, which raises money for the Donahue Academy.
