A smothering defense powered the Donahue Academy girls varsity basketball team to a convincing 45-27 win Thursday night over Seacrest Country Day School in a Florida High School Athletic Association regional quarter-final game. The annual Aquinas Center conference at Ave Maria University Feb. 6-8 will examine aspects of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Pope John Paul II's 1990 document dealing with the mission and norms for Catholic colleges and universities. The conference is free and open to the public.

The Ave Maria Stewardship Community District board has authorized taking steps toward implementing measures at several locations in the town center aimed at slowing down traffic and making the streets safer. The board also heard and considered a number of other items including plans for a lower-cost, higher-density housing development called Coquina at Maple Ridge in the Middlebrooke area.

 The Donahue Academy girls basketball team made the playoffs of the Florida High School Athletics Association in the first year of Donahue's eligibility in the FHSAA, the main organization for high school sports in Florida. The girls will play Seacrest Country Day Thursday, Feb. 6, in the first round of regional playoffs.

Philip Willingham, who had a leading role in the movie Hybrids that was shot in Ave Maria last year, has died of cancer at his London home, film producer Tony Schweikle has announced. Mr. Schweikle said the young man, in his early 30s, had complained of pain during the filiming and the illness was diagnosed when he returned home to England.

 Teams from Texas and Louisiana took top honors in the fourth annual Sunshine Steak Cook Off in Ave Maria Saturday. Twenty grill teams cooked 1,700 steaks at the event, which raises money for scholarships to the Rhodora Donahue Academy.  About 100 students, staff and alumni from Ave Maria University bundled up for the cold and joined thousands of others in Washington, D.C., Wednesday at the annual March for Life.
More than 20 grill teams from as far away as Texas and Louisiana as well as throughout the state of Florida will compete this Saturday in The Sunshine State Steak Cook Off, a highlight of the year in Ave Maria. This year, a 5k run has been added to the program that includes family fun and games, a parade, and – of course – a steak dinner.

A federal district court judge in Michigan has granted injunctive relief from the Obamacare contraceptive mandate to several non-profit organizations related to Tom Monaghan's philanthropic efforts, including the Rhodora J. Donahue Academy in Ave Maria, FL. Judge Stephen J. Murphy said he believed the plaintiffs had a strong likelihood of succeeding on the merits of the case. Women in politics -- past, present and future -- will be examined at the 4th annual Genuine Feminine conference at Ave Maria University Jan. 16-18. The theme of the conference, which is open to all, is, "Woman - a Political Animal?" and will feature a closing speech by Dr. Pia de Solenni (right), a noted commenter on issues relating to women, politics and Catholicism.
