The process is under way to build a new, permanent fire/rescue station in Ave Maria.
The Immokalee Fire Control District currently is seeking proposals to build the structure, which would accommodate eight personnel, various trucks and an ambulance.
Fire Chief Paul Anderson said in an interview that at least 15 firms have asked for copies of the Request for Proposal, which must be submitted later in December. Chief Anderson said that he hopes that the design process can be completed in the first half of the year and that the new station, which is planned to be located in the Park of Commerce area near the gas station in Ave Maria, would be open by the end of 2014.
Fire/Rescue crews and equipment are currently housed at a temporary facility near the Ave Maria University athletic fields.
In addition to providing better accommodation for personnel and room for expansion, a permanent facility would improve the ISO fire protection class rating for Ave Maria properties, resulting in lower property insurance costs.
