Drew Emmans enjoys fantasy fiction like that of masters like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. When he found the current crop of fiction in that genre lacking, he figured he'd give it a try himself.
"I wanted to write a book for a while," the 36-year-old Ave Maria resident explained. "I was reading some fantasy books and found them disappointing and said, 'I can't complain if I haven't written one myself,' so I sat down and wrote one."
The result is the recently-published novel Some Great and Mysterious Desire – A Faerie Tale.
"I wrote everything I like to read myself – supernatural, other worlds, a mysterious family," he said about the book he describes as a "classic quest tale."
This is Mr. Emmans's first writing project although he comes from a family which he says had a ceative tradition. "Two of my brothers are musicians and I come from a long line of literary types," he said.
Mr. Emmans is well known in the Ave Maria community, being one of the first residents to move to the town with his family in the late summer of 2007. He and his wife Jamie live with their six children – the youngest is one year old and the oldest 12 – in the Hampton Village neighborhood. His own kids, he said, are a little under the target age range for his book, which he says is from teen to adult. (Right, the Emmans family)
He had little time for writing the first four years he lived in Ave Maria, what with raising his family and attending Ave Maria University full-time, graduating with a degree in philosophy in 2011.
He said he's thinking of other books to write, but those plans are on hold as he has returned to AMU as a graduate student studying theology.
Some Great and Mysterious Desire – A Faerie Tale is available on Amazon.com.
Mr. Emmans is the second Ave Maria resident this year to turn out a work of fantasy fiction. Kevin Stinnet, who now lives in Michigan, published The Legends of Lohrendore - Book 1: The Boy Who Would Be King earlier this year. Mr. Stinnet's book is available at the publication's website http://www.thelegendsoflohrendore.com/, where there also is an excerpt of the book available to read.
