The Donahue Academy Shamrocks remained undefeated this season after soundly defeating Masters Academy 46-19 Saturday night in Vero Beach. The record of the 7-man football squad now is 4-0 with a major test in their next game, when they will play Clearwater, last season's state champions.
Matt Houde had four touchdowns, returning the opening kick-off and catching three TD passes. John Longely threw for a total of 174 yards, including three touchdowns, and rushed for 55 yards more.Lane Lawe and John Hurley added TD runs. Joe Deliso kicked 5 extra points.
John Hurley led the defense with 7 tackles and Dominic Allan added 5.5 tackles. Albert Mathieu had, perhaps, his best game with 6 tackles and a forced fumble. Marco Vega added a forced fumble and Luke Scheck recovered a fumble.
"The guys played well in the midst of adversity," said Coach Rich Scanlon. "After the 3 hour plus bus ride we had a lightning delay for over one hour postponing the start of the game. But, the seniors took leadership and prepared the team well during the delay. We came out strong and never looked back. Next, we look forward to playing state champion Clearwater at home."
The Clearwater game, recently added to the Shamrocks schedule, is at 3:30 pm Saturday, Sept 28, at North Park.
