The Ave Maria University football team now has something that has eluded them in their first two and a-half seasons of play -- a winning record.
The Gyrenes gave fans who turned out for their first game on a new on-campus field Saturday a thrill, winning their third straight in dramatic fashion, scoring two touchdowns in the final minute of play to beat NCAA Division II Florida Tech 41-45. AMU's record this year now stands at 3-2.
Trailing by 10 in the final minute, Clayton Uecker connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Karim Bryanton, then the Gyrenes recovered an onside kick and Uecker hit Bryanton again with a 16-yard strike for the winning touchdown as time ran out.
"I don't there is a better way to christen a new stadium than to throw a game-winning touchdown pass with less than a second left," Head Coach Marty Quinn said after the game. " I think it just showed what the environment was about. The parents, fans, and students all did a really good job of giving our guys extra mojo and allowing them to keep fighting. In the end, I think the guys just wanted to make this a special day for the University and I think they got that done."
The Gyrene football team will return to the field next Saturday when they host College of Faith at 1 p.m.
