The Ave Maria University Gyrenes notched their fifth straight win Saturday, beating Webber International 28-13 in a game played at AMU.
The game improved AMU's record this year to 5-2, and showed how far the Gyrenes have come in this turnaround season. When the two teams met last year, in a season when AMU managed just one win, Webber soundly defeated AMU 35-12.
The Ave Maria defense was particularly strong Saturday, snagging three interceptions and sacking the Webber quarterback five times. Tanner Bowling finished with eight solo tackles, four assists, a sack and two tackles for a loss. Gage Hayes had two interceptions.
"Gage Hayes is really elevating his game to some new heights," said Head Coach Marty Quinn. "Defense played huge today. They did a great job stopping Webber up front and shutting down the run."
Travis Makauskas paced the offense, catching five passes for 154 yards including two touchdowns. (Above, Makauskas heads for the endzone on one of those TDs)
Ave Maria plays its final home game of the season Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. against a struggling Edward Waters squad.
