In the wake of Ave Maria University President Jim Towey's announcement that AMU is suing to block the federal government's contraceptive mandate, a panel of scholars will discuss the issue in an event open to the public Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 8 p.m. on the AMU campus. Titled "Bad Policy: The Legal, Economic, and Ethical Implications of the HHS Mandate," the panel will include author and theologian Michael Novak and AMU professors Seana Sugrue and Joseph Burke. Ave Maria University announced Tuesday that it is suing for relief from the U.S. government's mandate that all insurance plans cover contraceptive services at no cost. The suit is being filed on behalf of AMU by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which has previously filed suits contesting the mandate on behalf of three other religious organizations.

Ave Maria University, paced by a game-high 25 points from Sandy Jenkins (right), won the Sun Conference Women's Basketball title Saturday with a convincing 72-51 win over St. Thomas at the Golisano Field House.  An 84-suite condominium resort hotel is being planned for the Ave Maria town center, across from Publix. The project is a joint venture between Barron Collier and Sunstream Hotels, which operates seven other similar properties in southwest Florida. Planned opening is early 2014.

 Sculptor Márton Váró , who carved the Annunciation bas relief on the Ave Maria Oratory, now has possession of sculptures that he sued his former business partner, Naples gallery owner Michael Windfeldt, to have returned. AMU President Jim Towey says the school's board will discuss legal options Monday following a revision to the federal government's mandate on provision of free contraceptive services. "We subsidize these health plans, so the question is whether university resources are underwriting this," Mr. Towey told the Washington Post. "I still don't think President Obama gets it," he added. A rally is planned for Sunday in Naples to protest the recent directive from the federal department of Health and Human Services that organizatioins such as Catholic colleges and hospitals must provide health insurance that covers free contraceptives.
