Ave Maria Cub Scouts Hold First Pinewood Derby

scouts1a-300Cars carved by Ave Maria cub scouts raced down a brand new aluminum track Sunday in the scouts' first pinewood derby.

The pinewood derby is an annual tradition for cub scouts throughout the United States. The Ave Maria scouts were given blocks of wood in December, and each scout worked with his parents to design and make his own, unique car. About 60 people turned out at the Donahue Academy gym Sunday to watch the races. (Some of the cars are pictured below, right)

Chase Llywellyn took home the trophy as the grand final winner. Joseph Burke came in 2nd overall followed by Bradley Imbus in third place. (pictured right, Joseph Burke, Bradley Imbus, Chase Llewellyn and Michael Buccheri with Den leaders Joseph Burke and Bradley Ritter)

Other awards for the fastest cars went to:

Tiger Den (first graders):  Bradley Imbus (first place), Michael Buccheri (second place), Joseph Burke (third place)

The scout leaders said they wanted to the Ave Maria community for supporting their fundraising activities which made the derby and other events possible. They also thanked Joseph Haas, an Eagle Scout and student at AMU, for assisting on the day of the event.scouts3a
