County Commissioner Jim Coletta met more than 100 Ave Maria residents at an ice cream social Saturday outside The Bean. He answered questions about Arthrex, Oil Well Rd. and the future of Eastern Collier County. "He's a great friend of Ave Maria," said Chelsea Allan (above, with her baby Mary Grace). Mr. Coletta is running for re-election this year.

The Immokalee Fire Control District -- which includes the town of Ave Maria -- won approval by voters Tuesday for a mill rate increase that will partially restore funding to the district, which has had to cut budgets and lay off employees because of lower revenues due to declining property values. The mill rate increase will add $75 in property taxes per $100,000 of assessed value. Two other Collier County fire districts had similar requests rejected at the polls.

The 2nd Sunshine State Steak Cook-Off in Ave Maria was twice as large this year, selling more than 1,100 steaks to residents and visitors who packed the Ave Maria town center Saturday. A team of Barron Collier employees won the first-place trophy for the best steak in Florida at the event, which raises money for the Donahue Academy.

Three buses pulled out of Ave Maria Friday evening, carrying 155 AMU students to the March for Life in Washington, D.C. - something that just 18 hours previously was in doubt when the first bus company the students hired reneged after cashing their check for $18,500. "God wanted you to be on these buses," said Father Robert Garrity (above) with a touch of humor as he blessed the students, "not those other buses."

The AMU Students for Life organization had to scramblie to find transportation for 155 students to go to Washington, DC, for the March for Life Monday after a charter bus company in Virginia canceled the trip at the last minute, despite having been paid more than $18,000 in advance. The students made alternative arrangements late Thursday.

More than a dozen runners from Ave Maria University competed in the Naples Daily News Half Marathon Sunday. The best time of the group was turned in by Ave Maria University's head of academic affairs, Michael Dauphinais, who finished 24th in the men's age 35-39 group with a time of 1:39:17.

Christopher Ringley, who faces charges of attempted murder in a shooting incident last week, will not be back at the Ave Maria School of Law, Dean Eugene Milhizer said Wednesday. The school released a statement from Mr. Milhizer saying, "Mr. Ringley has permanently withdrawn from Ave Maria School of Law and is no longer a student here, and he remains barred from campus. The legal process will continue and the school is committed to cooperating with the authorities. We will also continue to do all we can to support the other students involved in the January 13 event."

 This year's Sunshine State Steak Cook-Off Jan. 28 will be twice as large as last year's inaugural event, but organizer Tom Smith (right) believes this is only the start of something much bigger. The fundraiser has the potential to become a signature event in Florida, he said.

 The Chicago Fire return to Ave Maria for two weeks Jan. 20 to start their spring training for the 2012 Major League Soccer season. Practices will be open to the public daily and the team will play an exhibition game against FGCU Wednesday, Feb. 1, at North Park in Ave Maria.

A third-year law student at the Ave Maria School of Law remains in jail on a $1-million bond after being charged with attempted murder. Police say he shot at his roomate in their Heritage Bay apartment and threatened the life of his ex-girlfriend. All three are students at the law school.

Representatives of the Immokalee Fire Control District are holding a meeting in Ave Maria Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. to provide information and answer questions about a referendum to increase the millage rate by .75 mills to better fund the cash-strapped fire and rescue services. The referendum will be on the same ballot as the U.S. presidential primary Jan. 31.
