Bishop Frank Dewane has granted a request from the Donahue Academy to be affiliated with the Diocese of Venice and to call itself an "independent Catholic school," diocesan Director of Education Kathleen Schwartz said Wednesday. Donahue Headmaster Dan Guernsey refused to comment for The Ave Herald, saying he wished to speak solely to another publication. The Ave Maria academy also has been named to the Cardinal Newman Society's list of the top 50 Catholic High Schools in the U.S.

 Proud parents Veronique and Brian Scanlan were at St. Peter's Basillica in Rome last week for the ordination of their son Eric, one of 33 seminarians from the Pontifical North America College who were ordained as transitional deacons. Deacon Scanlan was nominated to the college by Bishop Frank Dewane of the Diocese of Venice.

 More than 60 people attended a 2nd Annual Rosary Rally organized on the AMU campus Saturday, Oct. 13, the 95th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima. At the rally, which was organized by Ave Maria resident Joanne Hallenbeck, prayers were offered for the country, our leaders and for the unborn.

Ave Maria Development has reached an agreement to sell the gas station facility on Ave Maria Blvd. to a "substantial distributor" although the deal won't be final until the successful completion of a due dilligence period that goes through mid-October, an AMD spokesman said Sunday.

Ave Maria School of Law graduates posted the best rate of passage of the Florida bar exam since the school moved to Florida, with 75.3 percent of those taking the test for the first time last July passing. The law school has lagged well behind other schools in previous years.
