Chicago Fire to Train Again in Ave Maria Jan. 20-Feb. 3

The Major League Soccer Chicago Fire announced today that the team will return to Ave Maria next January to train. The Fire spent 12 days training in Ave Maria before the start of the 2011 season.

Further Improvements to Oil Well Rd. Begin This Week

Construction is starting this week on significant improvements to the stretch of Oil Well Rd. between the two segments that are being widened to four and six lanes. The segment between Everglades Blvd. and Oil Well Grade Rd. will remain two lanes, but the lanes will be widened from 10 feet to 12 feet and paved shoulders will be added. The construction will mean the section will be down to one lane at times, so delays can be expected before it is completed in the spring of 2012.

 The Wasenshi Dojo karate training school in Ave Maria recently promoted seven students to new belt levels. Pictured, clockwise from upper left: James Grace was promoted to orange belt (8th kyu); Tommy Fournier to brown belt with a black stripe (1st kyu); Denise Chmielowski to brown belt with a black stripe (1st kyu); Luke Wallace to brown belt with a black stripe (1st kyu); Laura Buccheri to orange belt (8th kyu); John Hurley - one of the dojo's instructors - to Nidan (second degree black belt); and Elena Doman to white belt with an orange stripe (9th kyu).

Ed Cole, one of Ave Maria's first residents, passed away Monday after a brief illness. He was 84 and is survived by his wife, Marilyn, and his three children and four stepchildren. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at the Ave Maria Oratory, with viewing at 9:30 a.m.
