Barron Collier has told the Jackson Lab that the development company has withdrawn its offer of 50 acres of land which had been the proposed site for a genetics research facility, the company announced Friday. The announcement effectively eliminates Ave Maria as a potential location for Jackson Lab, which said it has begun discussions about locating in either Sarasota or Tampa.

The Jackson Laboratory has disclosed that there are preliminary discussions about the possibility of locating its proposed Florida research facility in Tampa or Sarasota as fallback locations. The lab says that the talks involve the University of South Florida, which s located in Tampa.

The motion, made by Commissioner Georgia Hiller, was defeated by a vote of 3-2, with Commissioner Tom Henning joining Mrs. Hiller in supporting it. The commissioners did vote to request a full accounting of all all time and money spent on the project to date.

Barron Collier has at least temporarily withdrawn its application to move 50 commercially-zoned acres from Camp Keais Rd. to a site on Oil Well Rd. and is expected to resubmit an application to relocate a larger amount of property currently zoned for commercial development. Barron Collier executive Blake Gable said the decision was not directly related to the Jackson Lab's decision to withdraw its initial application for state funding for its research facility that was proposed to be built on the Oil Well Rd. location.

Work crews overcame a number of obstacles Friday night to mount the panel with the face of Mary on the sculpture of the Annunciation on the front of the Ave Maria Oratory. Just three more panels remain to be mounted, after which work will continue until the official unveiling on the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25.

Saying it remains "enthusiastic" about its plan for a research facility near Ave Maria, the lab announced Tuesday that it has withdrawn its original funding application to the State of Florida pending meetings with Gov. Rick Scott and his economic team. The lab hopes to submit a new proposal once it has an opportunity to hear the governor's views, Lab COO Chuck Hewett said.
