Final preparations are being made so that the complex task of mounting the 75-ton sculpture depicting The Annunciation on the front of the Ave Maria Oratory can begin by the weekend.
The preparatory work began about a month ago, with removal of stones surrounding the spot where the sculpture will go, the stripping of the existing surface, and the application of special waterproofing material.
A large crane will be delivered Friday morning to enable the actual positioning of the marble blocks, the university's director of construction, Skip Doyle, said Thursday.
Sculptor Márton Váró began carving the bas-relief sculptureabout a year and a-half ago at a workstation on the university mall across from the oratory. He will continue to work on it when it is mounted in place on the oratory.
The sculpture will be officially "unveiled" on the Feast of the Annunciation March 25, 2011.
