Immokalee Fire Chief Fired

 The Immokalee Fire Control Board fired its chief of 12 years, Ray Alvarez, at its November monthly meeting Thursday night. Mr. Alvarez, who many at the public meeting said expected the move, was on vacation and was not in attendance. (The board, pictured above, from left: commissioners Lee, Brown, Olesky and Mathews)

The meaning of "inerrancy" of Scripture is one of the major topics that will be pursued following the recent Synod of bishops in Rome, says Dr. Michael Waldstein, who attended the month-long synod as an an expert -- or what the Vatican calls a "peritus."

Debate Society Shows Style

 A number of AMU students walked away with gowns they acquired "at a steal," for the coming formal dance when the St. Thomas More Debate Society held its 2008 Formal Gown Auction Fundraiser Friday night at The Secret Ingredient. Proceeds from the sale of the gowns, which ranged from $15 to over $50, will go to fund travel expenses for the debate team. Above, Sarah Richards models a gown.

AMU to Join Athletic Conference Next Year

The Sun Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has accepted AMU along with two other schools for membership. The conference will have a total of 12 schools next year, all but two of them in Florida. AMU plays several Sun Conference schools this year, including Webber International, Warner Southern, Florida Memorial, Northwood and St. Thomas.
