An Unusual Birthday Gift.... "A once in a lifetime experience, the opportunity to befriend a skilled hunting and fishing guide and provide a huge feast for family and neighbors with plenty of delicious leftovers..." This was Don Imbus's reaction to a much appreciated and a most exceptional birthday gift from his wife Darlene. A fully guided turkey hunt on private Barron Collier land just minutes away from Ave Maria was donated and arranged by Collier Family Farms, with the proceeds going to the Donahue Academy Scholarship Fund. Hunting for the prized Osceola turkey that lives only on the Florida peninsula, Tracker Don explains the thrill of the hunt:
"I got out my old twelve-gage shotgun and met the guide, Justin, at the Ave Maria gas station at 6:20 A.M., March 24. We were in the field with the blind completely set up by 6:45. Shortly after 7, just as it was beginning to get light, gobbles were heard from the distant tree line. Justin began his turkey calls and within minutes I spotted four 'black forms' moving towards us, moving at an erratic pace and sometimes strutting towards the sound of the call and the decoys we had set out. At a distance of 25 yards, two of the Toms were side by side approaching the decoy. Justin tapped me on the knee and whispered, 'NOW!' BLAM! One shot, two turkeys, all over by 7:15—less than one hour from the time I met Justin."
The picture above is worth pounds of white meat and a few drum sticks!
