Informal Discussion 'Communio Magistrorum' with Profs. Pakaluk and Waldstein

Date: Fri. 18 Nov, 2011 12:00 am - 1:00 am
(Fri. 18 Nov, 2011 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST)
Duration: 1 Hour
The Ave Herald is relaying notice of this weekly session at the Queen Mary Pub exactly as received...As many of you know, somewhat abruptly the eminent Prof. Pakastein, of North-northwest Central Siberian University, but a resident scholar at AMU, was called away near the end of the spring semester and consequently was unable to continue meeting with us, for our discussions of Ex Corde Ecclesiae.   Some of us knew even then the seriousness of his business, namely, that certain authorities and upper-mid-level bureaucrats had sought to consult with him relative to a suddenly become important project, called "Framework for a Consolidation of the Groundwork of the Ultimate Foundations for Basic Reasons constituting the Only Possible Source of Moral Principles and Natural Law."  This was a project in the arcane discipline of meta-meta-meta-physics, originally started more than two centuries ago by disciples of that Prussian genius, Immanuel Kant, but necessarily abandoned by them after several generations of researches and subsequently left completely unattended.   Given the explosive nature of that inquiry, the authorities were fearful that a project such as that needed to be "defused", much as one deals with an armament left over from the war or an unexploded ordinance.  It was not prudent to allow it to remain apparently inert in fields of philosophical thought.  Prof. Pakastein accordingly was called in to handle the situation, as only he, through his deep researches, would be able to carry out the required series of transcendental abductions necessary for rendering the entire inquiry pointless-- we mean "harmless".  Last we had heard, however, his work was stymied, as he had become caught between diverging categorical and hypothetical imperatives, which (poor man) sprang up suddenly and overwhelmed him.  Yet we have complete confidence in his ultimate success.\nDear Prof. Pakastein has sent us numerous communications from his state of, as it were, philosophical suspension, pleading with us to continue the seminar he had started in his absence.  Feeling as if orphaned, we are not so bold as to continue meeting under his name.  However, we do wish to announce the formation of a new group, not uninspired by the example of that singular man of science and scholarship: COMMUNIO MAGISTRORUM, Queen Mary Pub, Thursdays, 7-8 pm\nProfs. Pakaluk and Waldstein wish call this new group Communio Magistrorum, "community of scholars", as that phrase has been the gloss supplied by Popes since the 13th c on the phrase Universitas magistrorum, used to describe a university.  In good 13th century fashion, we propose to meet at a Publick House, where drinks may complement the inherent conviviality of such a gathering, viz. The Queen Mary, on Thursdays at 7pm, convening around any free tables outside.  The meeting will last no more than an hour, until 8 pm, although as regards participants continuing the discussion until a later hour if they wish -- nihil prohibet.  (Yes, Latin will be the secret language of the group.  Shhhh!) Our first topics: 1.  What is a university?  How does it differ from a college?  and 2.  What is implied by Ex Corde's teaching that a university is constituted by the faculty together with their students? For background reading we wish to recommend, as supplying helpful perspective and an objective point of view from someone who has no axe to grind, the entry, "University", in Johnson's Cyclopedia, available from google books here.  However, it is not necessary to do this background reading in order to attend. Please feel free to spread the word.  Also, as always, if you do not wish to be included on the mailing list for this group, please let us know.  THE LAST VERIFIED PHOTO OF PROF. PAKASTEIN (in Siberia)
