"I'm a pacifist," says Winfried Krepf, reflecting on how and why he got involved coaching a team of Ave Maria teens to combat other paintball teams in Collier County. "But my son got interested when he tried it at a birthday party two years ago and one thing led to another."
The team, named the Ave Coalition, started practicing a year and a-half ago and won its first tournament in December, beating five other teams at a paintball park located by the Collier County fairgrounds. The boys won new paintball guns for winning that tournament of beginner teams, and now face a tougher test when they defend their division title Saturday. Their meet, at the same location by the Fairgrounds, is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and all are welcome to come and cheer on the team. Admission is free. The Coalition is always interested in potential new team members, Coach Krepf said, and the team also is hoping for sponsorships to help defray the cost of equipment. Anyone interested should get in touch with Winfried Krepf directly at 239-280-7329.
