Experience trumped youth Sunday as Michael Dauphinais, Ave Maria University's head of academic affairs, finished ahead of a strong Ave Maria University contingent that competed in the Naples Daily News Half Marathon.
Dr. Dauphinais ran the half marathon in 1:39:17, finishing 259th in the overall field of more than 1,600 runners. He was 24th in the crowded age group of men 35-39.
Eileen Gallagher, who helped organize the Ave Maria group effort, said it was a great experience. "For almost all of us this was our first half marathon which was exciting," she said, "but the best part was running with so many others from Ave."
Other strong finishers included Drew Miles and Chris Audino, who placed 10th and 11th in the men's 19-24 age group, and Caroline Galluzzi, who was 17th in the women's 19-24 age group with a time of 1:57:4.
