Free Throw Competition Draws Dozens of Contestants


freethrow1The Knights of Columbus national free-throw competition attracts thousands of contestants every year. Saturday, the first local contestants participated in the event at the Donahue Academy gym, with eight of them moving on to the next step -- the district-level competition.

Event organizer Don Stuller said more than 25 contestants from Ave maria, Immokalee and Golden Gate Estates participated. The contest was open to all boys and girls ages 10-14.

Each contestant had to shoot 15 free throws and the first-place winners received a plaque as well as the chance to compete at the district level.

"This was our first free throw contest, the kids had a good time and I know we will  have more contestants every year," Mr. Stuller said.

The winners were:

Girls 10 years: Teresa Guerra
Girls 12 years: Monet Burkett
Girls 14 years: Ann Guernsey

Boys 10 years: Daniel Ledesma
Boys 11 years: Jonathen Ortegon
Boys 12 years: Roger Mendez
Boys 13 years: Mitchell Watts
Boys 14 years: Victor Velesquez
