A memorial Mass will be held Thursday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. in the Ave Maria Oratory for recent AMU graduate Jon Scharfenberger, who died at age 22 in a car accident in Georgia.
Mr. Scharfenberger's funeral is Saturday, Oct. 22, in his hometown of Warwick, NY.
The young man, who went to work for the organization Students for Life after graduating from AMU in May, was returning home to Virginia from a pro-life conference in Atlanta when the car he was in was struck head-on by a driver who had been attempting to pass two cars on a Georgia road. The crash also claimed the life of another Students for Life worker, her unborn baby and the driver of the oncoming car.
Mr. Scharfenberger was the son of Dr. Dennis Scharfenberger and Anna (Smith) Scharfenberger of Warwick, NY. The family said in a statement, "Jon was born a perfect baby boy, grew into a pure and holy young man, and is now our saint in heaven. He lives in our hearts forever."
He is remembered in Ave Maria as an engaging and energetic young man who cared passionately about the pro-life cause. Several AMU students and recent graduates have traveled to New York for his funeral.
He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Kimberly and Amy; a brother, Thomas; paternal grandparents, Edward and Elaine Scharfenberger; maternal grandmother, Lydia Smith; uncles, Edward Scharfenberger and James Scharfenberger; aunts, Miriam Muse and Lois Sheptuck.
Memorial donations may be sent to Students for Life of America, 9255 Center Street, Suite 300, Manassas, VA 20110.
All are welcome to attend the memorial Mass Oct. 27.
