County Commissioners Approve Zoning Change for Oil Well Rd. Development

towncenterThe Collier County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a zoning change Tuesday that provides appropriately-zoned property along Oil Well Rd. for development of a manufacturing facility by medical device marker Arthrex. The company has announced its intention to build the plant, which would be at the southwest corner of Ave Maria, although it has yet to make a final decision on the site. The map at right shows the original location of the 50 acres in Town Center Two, located south of Pope John Paul II Blvd.

The move splits a planned commercial area of Ave Maria known as Town Center Two, moving 50 acres to the site along Oil Well Rd. Barron Collier has said it will donate 21 of those acres to Arthrex.

Zoning decisions are normally made based on whether the type of use that is proposed is appropriate for the property and are not supposed to take into account who will actually be using the property. Commissioner Georgia Hiller, who was the commission's lone vote against providing econimic incentives to Arthrex, voted in favor of the zoning change because she said it did not specifically deal with the company.

Arthrex CEO Reihold Schmieding has said he was disappointed that the commissioners did not unanimously support his company's request for $2.2 million in economic incentives. The company has said it will make a final decision on where it will expand shortly.
