The most senior American in the Roman Curia at the Vatican, Cardinal William Levada, will be the principal celebrant at the Baccalaureate Mass that precedes Ave Maria University's commencement exercises May 7.
Cardinal Levada heads the Vatican's Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, the office held by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI. Cardinal Levada, who had been archbishop for the arch-diocese of San Francisco before being picked for his current post by Pope Benedict, will receive an honorary doctorate degree from AMU following the Mass, which begins at 9 a.m. in the oratory.
For the first time since AMU's move to the campus in the town of Ave Maria, the commencement exercises will not be held in the oratory. They'll begin at noon in the Golisano Field House, with Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson (left) delivering the commencement address.
The class of 2011 is the first AMU graduation class in which students attended all four years at the permanent campus in Ave Maria.
