Some people spend years studying the history and mythology and ancient Greece. And some people, apparently, can get through it in 99 minutes.
Although it's not what anyone would study in the Ave Maria University Classics Department, the AMU Theatre Department will be presenting a somewhat irreverant take on ancient Greece in its spring drama production, The Iliad, The Odyssey and All of Greek Mythology in 99 Minutes or Less. The play willl be presented Friday and Saturday, March 18-19, with a special preview performance Thursday, March 17 (at which anyone showing up in a toga gets in for half price).
"The play is a comic spoof of all that's classically Greek," said AMU adjunct drama professor Charles Kolmann. It's billed by its Florida playwrights, Jay Hopkins and John Hunter, as a "comedy of mythical proportions in two acts." According to Mr. Kolmann, "the production presents all the Gods, Goddesses, Lovers, and Heroes of Greek mythology, plus all of Homer's great classic stories of the Iliad and Odyssey, at a breath-taking pace by a cast of seven actors employing their improv skills and scores of costumes, wigs, beards, and props." Right, John Boland rehearsing recently as Poseidon.
Mr. Kolmann said that he stumbled upon the play while searching for something to replace a planned production of Pirates of Penzance, which fell through.
Advanced ticket reservations may be made by phone at (239) 280-2550. or may be purchased at the door on the evenings of the performances. Tickets are $6.00 at the door or $5.00 if purchased in advance. The Thursday night presentation is a preview performance at which those attending the performance dressed in Greek tunics or togas will be admitted for $3.00.
