Today's college students are significantly more pro-life than their parents' generation, Students for Life National Executive Director Kristan Hawkins told a group of two dozen supporters from Ave Maria and Naples at a luncheon Thursday.
"Polls show this generation is pro-life and sees abortion as a human rights issue," Ms. Hawkins said. "It's our parents' generation that is not pro-life."
Ms. Hawkins told the gathering at the home of Nancy and Randy Freeman in Bellera Walk that the Students for Life organization has been steadily growing in influence on American college campuses since a grant in 2006 enabled the organization to hire a full-time staff. Since then, she said, the number of chapters on U.S. campuses has grown from fewer than 200 to more than 600 and the organization employs 11 people full-time. The group also had 1,800 members attend its annual conference recently, which Ms. Hawkins said was the largest pro-life conference in the world. Right, Mrs. Freeman (L) with Ms. Hawkins.
Mrs. Freeman said that when she heard Ms. Hawkins was going to be in Ave Maria to address students Thursday night, she wanted to hold an event to introduce the young activist to other members of the community. "I have great respect for the work Kristan is doing," Mrs. Freeman said.
Under Ms. Hawkins's leadership, Students for Life has become a respected force in the pro-life movement, working with a number of other national organizations. More information can be found at their website here.
