Ave Maria University student John Jochum was awed by the turnout of more than 400 people last year for a fundraiser he organized for a seven-year-old boy fighting cancer. This year, he's hoping for an even larger turnout to raise money to help with Randal Nychik's medical expenses.
John was playing music at a barbecue last summer when he first met Randall, recalling that the young boy was fascinated with the guitar. He arranged with the Guitar Center in Ft. Myers to donate a guitar to present to Randall and hoped to raise money for the boy to take guitar lessons. He raised that and more at a rockin' evening in the Ave Maria town center last year which culminated in the presentation of the guitar to Randall, who promptly delighted the crowd by striding to the microphone and singing The Wheels on the Bus. (Right, Randall singing with his new guitar, backed up by John Jochum.)
This year's event will be held outside the Ave Maria University student union at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome and admission is free. Organizers will be selling bracelets, t-shirts and holding raffles to raise money for the family's medical expenses, which include frequent trips to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
