A relic of St. Mary Magdalene, recorded as the first witness to the Resurrection of Jesus, will be at the Ave Maria Oratory Nov. 19 as part of a tour of the United States. The relic is on loan from its home in the French diocese of Frejus-Toulon and Ave Maria is its only stop in southwest Florida.
The schedule (below) for Ave Maria includes public veneration, masses, a lecture and a rosary procession.
A French Dominican priest, Fr. Thomas Michelet, is touring with the relic with the permission of Bishop Dominique Rey of the diocese of Frejus-Toulon. A letter of authentication from Bishop Rey says that Mary Magdalene's relics were hidden at the time of the Saracen invasions, rediscovered in 1279, and have been venerated without interruption ever since.
"They are presently kept by the Dominican priests in the cave of St. Baume, a party of my diocese," the letter reads. "A new reliquary (left) has been constructed to allow one of the relics, a piece of the tibia (shinbone) to travel to different countries for veneration by the entire Church.
The relic's current tour takes it to about 20 cities in the United States, with two of its stops in Florida. Aside from Ave Maria, the relic will be in Miami Nov. 20. (Click here for the full U.S. schedule)
