New "Megadorm" Dedicated at AMU

Ave Maria University has doubled its capacity of housing students on campus with the official dedication today of a so-called "megadorm." The new four-story dormitory can house 550 students and is the largest building on the campus other than the Ave Maria Oratory.

Ave Maria now has space for about 1,100 students to live on campus, which is significantly more than this year's enrollment, which Chancellor Tom Monaghan said was about 700.

"It's a vote for the future," said university President Nick Healy, and an example of "long-term thinking," added Mr. Monaghan.

Constructing the building now, Mr. Monaghan said, saves the university money and provides housing for an expected increase in enrollment next year.

The building was designed and built by the Haskell Company from Jacksonville, FL, and company president Steven T. Halverson (right, at lecturn) also announced at the ceremony that his company was donating $52,000 to the Ave Maria Scholarship Fund.

The building reflects the Prairie-style of Frank Lloyd Wright, as do the other buildings on the campus.
