Basketball Camp a Success

bbcamp1AMU Athletics Directory Brian Scanlan says he's really encouraged by a large response to a two-week university-sponsored basketball camp that ended Friday. He's looking to offer another camp later this summer, and also is hoping to organize a swim team for the town.

The basketball camp was led by university head basketball coach Jamon Copeland and was held at the Donahue Academy gym. "We taught all the basic skills," Mr. Scanlan said, "and the kids had a great time." About 30 boys and girls participated.

"The experience with the basketball camp showed there's a need in town for this sort of activity," Mr. Scanlan said.

He said that there will be an organizational meeting Thursday for all town residents who might be interested in starting a competitive swim team. The team would compete in meets sponsored by the  Swim Florida Association.

The organizational meeting is Thursday at 7:45 p.m. in the university visitor's center.

The swim age divisions would be:

6 and under
8 and under
10 and under
12 and under
16 and under
19 and under

Mr. Scanlan said the group would request use of the 25-meter lap lanes at the water park for practices, and meets would be at Collier County swim parks. He is hoping to keep the cost to between $10 and $15 per week per swimmer to cover the expense of a part-time swimming coach and fees to join the Swim Florida organization. Swimming meets and equipment would be extra.
