Dr. Caitlin McLauglin-Raiger has eight kids of her own - the youngest only a few weeks old - and she knows what children need. So when some of those needs were not met in the town of Ave Maria when she moved here with her family two years ago, she started to do something about it.
Providing dental services was relatively simple. As a dentist herself, she opened a dental practice in the town at the end of last year.
For a pre-school, she got in touch with her long-time friend in Massachusetts, Pheroza Madon (right), about starting a pre-school. Mrs. Madon was director of a Montessori pre-school in Newton, MA for more than 30 years and she decided to take on the founding of a similar school in Ave Maria as "a retirement project." Montessori schools teach in methods developed by Italian educator Maria Montessori.
The school hopes to open in August and is looking at various options for space in the town center, Dr. Raiger said.
Residents are invited to a continental breakfast at The Bean Sunday after the 10 a.m. Mass to hear more about the school. The meeting will also hear from Dr. Brian Thornburg, a Naples pediatrician who is considering establishing part-time hours in Ave Maria.
"All interested parents should attend and show their support for these two great endeavors to help the community," Dr. Raiger said. "All input is invited and needed to plan well for the future."
