The weekend in the town center featured music for almost everyone's taste. Sunday afternoon, the AMU choirs, accompanies by a 22-piece professional orchestra, performed music of the Passion under the direction of Michael McDonnell, chair of the university's department of sacred music. The performance earned a standing ovation from the audience of about 800 people inside the oratory. Click here for a previous story featuring the concert's program.
The night before, the sound couldn't have been more different. Hundreds of people spilled onto La Piazza in the town center to listen to "Swampfest '09" -- AMU's annual Battle of the Bands held outside The Bean of Ave Maria. In addition to a few hundred students, the crowd ranged from young children dancing in their pajamas before falling asleep to many of the town residents.
Fr. Joseph Fessio, the university's theologian in residence and a strong supporter of the performing arts at the university, attended both events and was a judge for the Battle of the Bands. "Both events showed the talent at the university," he said, "and it's interesting that many of the same students performed at both."
Below, the choir receives a standing ovation at the conclusion of its concert. Following that, are other pictures from the Battle of the Bands.
