Barbara B. Henkels, an active supporter of a number of Catholic educational institutions and charities, has been named to the Board of Trustees of Ave Maria University. Her husband, Paul, was a founding trustee of AMU and was the board's chairman when he died in January at age 84.
"We did everything together," she said, "and I told [AMU President] Nick Healy that I certainly can't fill Paul's shoes, but I will be an excellent cheerleader for the university."
Mr. Healy, in a remembrance of Paul Henkels on the Ave Maria website, called Mr. and Mrs. Henkels "one of the most dynamic, generous and effective lay Catholic couples in the nation, and perhaps the world."
Mrs. Henkels currently is a trustee of St. Thomas Aquinas College in California, a small Catholic liberal arts institution, and was on the board of trustees at Franciscan University of Steubenville for more than 10 years in addition to involvement with a number of other academic institutions and Catholic charities. Her home is in the Philadelphia area but she also spends time at a condominium she has in the town center at Ave Maria. She has 10 children and 28 grandchildren.
"It's an honor to serve on the board of Ave Maria University," she said. "I think very highly of it, it does so much good and there is so much need for a university like Ave Maria."
