The Donahue Academy Shamrocks are heading to the state 8-man football championship game for the third time in four years, winning their semi-final game against Old Plank Christian School from Jacksonville 47-6 Thursday night to remain undefeated this season.
The Shamrocks started slowly, falling behind 6-0, on their home field at North Park in Ave Maria. But after giving up six, they didn't allow another point for the rest of the game.
Mark Cheffers had two interception returns for touchdowns and added a third score on a 32-yard- pass from quarterback Elias Allan, who also ran for one touchdown himself. JP Klucik and Randy Beidelshies each rushed for touchdowns. Julian Diaz recovered a fumble and helped lead a solid defensive effort. (Pictured - the team celebrating after the win. "The key was our senior leadership," said Coach Rich Scanlon. "I was happy with the effort and hard work that each of our players showed tonight."
The Shamrocks will begin preparing immediately for the state championshp game Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Southeastern University in Lakeland. Their opponent will be decided Friday night when City of Life plays Master's Academy in Vero Beach. Master's Academy is also undefeated this year, with a record of 10-0. City of Life is 7-1 -- their only loss was to Donahue earlier in the season.
A fan bus is being organized to go to the championships. If interested, get in touch with Athletic Director Janet Deliso at
