Do
nahue Academy showed once again Saturday that it is a force to be reckoned with at the Collier County Scholar Bowl competition.
The Donahue team of senior Tommy Smith and juniors Thomas Dauphinais and CJ Smith finished second overall, nosed out by Barron Collier High School in the ten-team competition. Thomas Dauphinais was selected to be part of Collier County's six-person team at the state championships in Orlando in April. (pictured, l-r, CJ Smith, Tommy Smith and Thomas Dauphinais)
The county scholar bowl competition started Friday and the top five teams moved on to the finals Saturday.
Donahue teams have consistently out-performed larger high schools in the competition for five years but the team's second-place finish Saturday was its highest ever.
It's also the fifth straight year that Donahue has had a representative on the county's team at the state championships. Tommy Smith went in 2013 and 2014, Joseph Guernsey in 2012 and Micheal-John Dauphinais 2011.
In the competition, teams from participating schools compete against each other based on questions from the area
s of mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, fine arts, foreign language and current events. The Donahue team has been practicing together for about six years, and have competed against some of the other students since middle school. The team also earned a $150 scholarship for the school that was provided by Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board, Inc.
The final match will be broadcast Monday night, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. on cable channel 99.
