Fr. Cory Mayer, administrator of the Ave Maria quasi-parish, has announced plans to open a parish activities center next to the parish office in the town center.
Residents of Ave Maria have not lacked Catholic worship space, but many have long wished for space for other activities that are part of parish life in most places.
Fr. Mayer told parishioners at weekend Masses that the parish is starting a capital campaign to cover costs of building out, leasing and operating the space, which he estimates to be $250,000. Of that amount, $100,000 has already been raised through what he called a "silent campaign" from private donors and the parish is turning to the community for the remaining $150,000.
The center would be located directly behind the oratory, at the corner of Pope John Paul II Blvd. and Annunciation Circle. Fr. Mayer said it would be used for parish meetings, faith formation classes, social events, support for charitable activities, "and, of course, fellowship after Sunday Mass which I believe is so important."
It will have space for about 100 people and will also be available to members of the parish, faith groups and civic organizations.
Fr. Mayer said that build-out will begin as soon as the money has been raised, which he hopes would be early in 2015.
