Ave Maria University junior Regina Russo said she was "humbled" by the support she received from people who turned out Saturday night for a benefit concert she organized to raise money for cancer research.
Miss Russo put on the event to honor her mother and other relatives who have died of cancer. The several thousand dollars raised will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Lung Cancer Alliance.
"I am so amazed with how everything turned out and humbled by the support I received for the event," she said. "I fervently hope that I made my mom and cousins proud."
Several people have asked whether the concert will become an annual event, Miss Russo said, adding that she thought that "would be an awesome thing."
"I will be a senior next year, so it would be so cool to kind of 'leave my mark' on the school with something that is so dear to my heart."
