Crucifix, Stations, Being Installed in Oratory

Two major steps toward completing the inside of the Ave Maria Oratory are taking place this week with the installation of the crucifix over the altar and the Stations of the Cross.

Work to assemble and hang the crucifix is under way and expected to be completed by the end of the week. For safety reasons, the front half of the church is closed and a temporary altar has been set up in the middle of the church.

The crucifix weighs about 3,000 pounds, according to information from AMU. The corpus is cast bronze, measuring about 12 and a-half feet tall by ten and a-half feet wide, and weighs 1,400 pounds. The cross is oak over a steel core, measures approximately 23 and a-half feet tall by 12 feet wide, and weighs 1,600 pounds. It was transported to Ave Maria from Michigan in several pieces and is being assembled inside the Oratory.

The remaining Stations of the Cross are also scheduled to be installed during the week and Fr. Tatman said he hoped that job should also be completed by Friday.

Bishop Frank Dewane is to celebrate the 9 a.m. Mass Saturday as part of AMU's Festival of Religious Life.
