The Ave Maria School of Law in Naples has announced that it has chosen Kevin Cieply, an associate dean of academics at John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, as its next president and dean effective July 1.
Mr. Cieply will succeed Eugene Milhizer who announced in November that he would be stepping down at the conclusion of this academic year to return to a teaching role at the law school.
"I will arrive with an attitude of service; service to our Catholic Mission, to the men and women who work and study at Ave Maria School of Law, to our alumni from both our Naples and Ann Arbor campuses, and finally, service to the community," Mr. Cieply said in a statement released by the law school.
Before joining the faculty at the John Marshall Law School in 2008, Mr. Cieply served for more than 22 years in the Army and Wyoming Army National Guard as a helicopter pilot and a Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) Officer. As a JAG Officer, his practice included prosecuting courts-martial cases, prosecuting major criminal procurement fraud cases in federal courts as a full-time Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, and serving as the Senior Legal Advisor on all military matters for the Wyoming Army National Guard. He retired from the military with the rank of Colonel.
He holds an LLM from The Judge Advocate General's School and a Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School as well as a bachelor's degree from Northern Kentucky University. He is also a Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy Senior Military College Fellow.
The chair of the search committee of the law school's board of governors said that after an 'exhaustive national search," Mr. Cieply was unanimously endorsed by the search committee and unanimously approved by the Board of Governors. "
