Many of those attending the noon daily Mass Tuesday in the Ave Maria oratory got quite a surprise -- an opportunity to venerate a relic of the apostle St. Jude.
The first-class relic -- part of the apostle's forearm -- has been at a Dominican shrine in Chicago since 1939, but recently, Fr. Michail Ford, director of the shrine, has begun taking it to various parts of the United States.
"We want to share this treasure," Fr. Ford said after displaying the relic and talking to students at the Donahue Academy about the saint's life following the noon Mass Tuesday. St. Jude, one of the 12 apostles, is the patron saint of lost causes and what Fr. Ford called "seemingly impossible situations."
The relic is in a specially-made sterling silver reliquary shaped like a person's forearm. The reliquary was sealed in 1794, Fr. Ford said.
It will be at the 5 p.m. Mass Tuesday and at both the noon and 5 p.m. Masses Wednesday in Ave Maria.
