Eugene Milhizer, who headed the Ave Maria School of Law since its move to Florida, has announced he will step down as president and dean of the school effective July 1, 2014. He will continue to teach at the Naples law school.
Mr. Milhizer, an Ave Maria resident, took the reins of the law school as acting dean in April, 2009, taking over from founding president Bernard Dobranski, just before the school completed its move from Michigan to Florida. He was named President and Dean a year later.
"After over six years as Dean and Acting Dean of Ave Maria School of Law, I have decided to step down to return to what I enjoy most – teaching," Mr. Milhizer said in a statement issued by the law school. "It has been an honor and a privilege to lead Ave Maria School of Law through a very exciting and sometimes challenging period of her history. Professionally, I look forward to returning to being a full-time faculty member. I remain committed to the law school and to our distinctive mission of educating lawyers with the finest professional skills, rooted in the natural law and the Catholic intellectual tradition."
Under his leadership, the law school formed an Advanced Critical Thinking Department, established the school's first named chair, launched the co-curricular International Law Journal and created a Curriculum Advisory Board and Alumni Advisory Council.
Mr. Milhizer is a retired Army Judge Advocate. He is a native of the Detroit, Michigan area, and holds BA and JD degrees from the University of Michigan, and an LL.M degree from the Judge Advocate General's School in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was the first honor graduate in his class and thereafter taught for a three-year appointment.
A search committee, representing members of the Board of Governors, faculty and administration has been appointed to begin the process of finding a new dean and president for the law school.
