Anyone taking a stroll on the university mall during the last few months has likely seen the marble relief of The Annunciation being sculpted by Marton Varo. That sculpture is a 5:1 scale model of the marble relief that will be taking shape for at least the next year. At right, Mr. Varo examines the scale model. The smaller model in the middle of the picture is for a mold that will be used to make bronze castings of the relief.
Thursday at 11 a.m., Mr. Varo will make the first chisel strike on a 10-ton block of marble that will form part of the actual-size sculpture that, when finished, will be installed at the front of the oratory, just over the statues of the apostles above the main doors.
The marble has been imported from Italy, from the same quarry as the marble used in Michelangelo's Pieta that is in the Vatican.

The full-sized sculpture of The Annunciation will go in the grey area between the main doors and the round window.
