Sculptor Márton Váró's signature work may be The Annunciation over the main doors of the Ave Maria oratory, but for many in town, a smaller work by Mr. Váró may have more meaning to them personally.
A three-foot white marble statue of Christ the Good Shepherd was installed and blessed by Fr. Cory Mayer Tuesday as a memorial to Alex Klucik, who died in a car accident in Ave Maria three years ago at the age of 19.
The statue, titled Good Shepherd - Bonus Pastor, was commissioned by the Klucik family.
"We hope this portrayal of the gaze of Christ the Good Shephard inspires much contemplation," Mr. Klucik said. "The Good Shepherd was chosen to highlight and inspire the joy and healing we can all find in God's infinite mercy and love, the hope and comfort we can all find in God during trials or fears -- especially death-- and the joyful and loving sacrifice made by priests for God's flock.
The Klucik family also hopes to honor their son's memory through the Alex Klucik Grace Fund, which helps support the Rhodora J. Donahue Academy, Ave Maria University and the continuing presence of the Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist in Ave Maria. No money from the fund was used for the statue, Mr. Klucik said. Left, the klucik family with Fr. Mayer)
