A team from the Donahue Academy of Ave Maria won the Collier County JV Scholar Bowl tournament Saturday, beating Gulf Coast High School and Community School of Naples in the final round.
A total of eight teams competed, answering questions on a variety of subjects including mathematics, science, history and literature. In the final round, Donahue finished first with 232 points, followed by Gulf Coast at 229 and Community School at 218. The Donahue team, pictured l-r, included Freshmen Joan Cheffers and Thomas Dauphinais, Sophomore Max Towey, freshman C.J. Smith and Sophomore Thomas Smith, and was coached by Dr. Michael Dauphinais.
Thomas Smith was honored by being selected to be part of Collier County's six-person team that will compete in the statewide Commissioner's Academic Challenge tournament in Orlando next weekend – the only underclassman on the team. This is the third consecutive year that Donahue has had students selected to participate on the Collier County team -- Andrew Guernsey was chosen in 2012 and Michael John Dauphinais in 2011.
