Donahue Academy graduate Andrew Guernsey has prevailed in a battle to win official recognition for a pro-life student group at Johns Hopkins University, where he now is a freshman.
Mr. Guernsey drew substantial attention from mainstream media when he complained that the Johns Hopkins Student Government Association (SGA) was limiting free speech by denying official status to his group, Voice for Life. A syndicated column by George Will questioned the university's commitment to free speech and diversity of opinion and even a spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union, while acknowledging that Johns Hopkins, as a private university, had the right to limit students' speech, said it would be "profoundly wrong" to do so. After the SGA rejected the group's request for status, Mr. Guernsey appealed to the SGA judiciary which Tuesday overturned the denial.
Mr. Guernsey posted news on his group's Facebook page overnight that, "Tthe Judiciary Committee of the Student Government Association unanimously hold to overturn the decision of the SGA Senate to deny official group status to Voice For Life (VFL). Effective immediately, VFL will be granted newly recognized group status."
