Gov. Rick Scott will be the commencement speaker at Ave Maria University's graduation ceremonies May 4, the university announced Thursday.
The school also said that it will honor Kevin J. "Seamus" Hasson, the founder of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, with the conferral of an honorary doctoral degree. The Becket Fund has represented AMU in its suit against the Obama administration over its mandate that health insurers provide coverage for birth control and other procedures against Catholic teaching free of charge.
"Our graduates are very fortunate to have our state's chief executive address them," AMU President Jim Towey said in a statement. "They also will enjoy having Seamus Hasson as part of their graduating class, for he has placed his Catholic faith in the service of protecting religious liberty and the right of conscience."
AMU says it expects to confer a total of 159 undergraduate and 15 graduate degrees this year.
