AMU Baseball Team Notches Impressive Win Against FGCU

Joe Bocchino scattered six hits and gave up just three earned runs over nine innings to lead the Ave Maria baseball team to an 8-6 win Sunday over FGCU, ranked 23 nationally in the NCAA Division 1. The win was AMU's first ever against a ranked NCAA Division 1 team in any sport, and improved the Gyrenes record to 23-10 -- a record number of wins for the AMU baseball team.
Right fielder Tucker Starkey led the Gyrenes offensively, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Third-baseman Trace McDermott went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and catcher Conor Sullivan went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Bocchino, a junior, struck out five and walked three in improving his his record to 5-1.
AMU will travel to St. Petersburg for a 7 p.m. game against Eckerd College Monday and return home March 22 when they welcome St. Thomas for a weekend Sun Conference series.
