Ave Maria has been the scene of many afternoon events, but perhaps none as varied as what's on tap Saturday, March 9.
The annual Touch of the Irish event from noon til 4 p.m. will feature music, family activities, entertainment and, of course, Irish food and libations. Main entertainment will be the popular local Irish band West of Galway.
This year's event also features an art show and chalk art competition to benefit the Casa de Bambini pre-school in Ave Maria. Art will be displayed for sale beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, with creations and photographs by local artists and many Ave Maria students. Art will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, and will range in price from $5 to $150. Anyone wishing to donate art -- with 60 percent of the proceeds going to the pre-school -- can drop it off at the Casa de Bambini. The pre-school also is sponsoring a chalk-art competition. There still is space available for entrants, who will compete for prizes of cash and merchandise. The competition is open to everyone, with age categories of adult, 13-17, 7-12 and six and under. More information on the art sale and chalk art competition is on the pre-school website here.
Also, from morning until afternoon, the Orange Blossom Special bike race will be going through Ave Maria, skirting the town center where the Touch of the Irish festival will be held. More information on the race including a route map is available on the event's website here.
