"Would you like to honor Pope Benedict by helping make lunches for the needy in Immokalee?" Ave Maria University student affairs staffer Stephanie Speier asked repeatedly as students filed past lunch-preparation stations set up by the cafeteria in the student union.
Most students readily agreed, joining others preparing brown-bagged lunches of sandwiches, fruit, chips and water for delivery to a soup kitchen in Immokalee.
"These are great kids, and they want to help," AMU VP of Student Affairs Bill Kirk said as he watched dozens of students prepare more than 300 lunches.
The service project took place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- the final three hours of the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI, who boarded a helicopter taking him from the Vatican before his resignation became effective at 8 p.m. Rome timer -- 2 p.m. in Ave Maria.
There have been special Masses, lectures and observances in Ave Maria honoring the former pontiff, and prayers for the cardinals who will choose his successor.
